Lugu Lake

Lugu Lake, at the border between Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces and about 200 kilometers from Lijiang City, is like a beautiful emerald shining in the mountains of the Northwest Yunnan Plateau. As the “mother lake” of the local Mosuo people, Lugu lake with an area of 50 square kilometers and is the third deepest freshwater lake in China (average depth is 40 m). Taking a boat, the crystal-clear lake is surrounded by verdant mountains, the combination of lakes and mountains makes people feel relaxed and happy.

Mosuo people, the main residents of Lugu Lake, still retains the matriarchal society so the mother dominates everything, and women have a high status in the family. This unique ethnic style has painted Lugu Lake with an ancient and mysterious color.

Put together by the great director Zhang Yi Mou, most renowned for his work on the Beijing Olympics’ Opening Ceremony, this outdoor theater happens to be set over sea level by about 3300 meters. The Jade Dragon Mountain is used as a backdrop for it.
