Lijiang Old Town
Lijiang Old Town, also known as Dayan Old Town, was built in the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty (late 13th century AD) with a history of 800 years.
The ancient city takes the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the background and the flowing water as the soul. It perfectly combines mountains, water, and the living environment to create an excellent example of human habitat showing the harmony between man and nature. The unique urban layout, tortuous streets, the scattered residential houses, and the flowing streams make it stand out in many famous ancient towns.
– Mu’s Residence
Situated in the southwest of the Lijiang Old Town, Mu’s Residence was the former house of the Mu family, took more than 60 years, and covered an area of over 16 acres, and consisted of almost one hundred buildings so it could be called as a miniature Forbidden City. Presently, the Mu’s Residence was rebuilt after the earthquake in 1996. The reconstruction is based on the original site and reappears the magnificence of the great palace.
– Zhongyi Market
Located at the southern end of the old town, the Zhongyi market is one of the must-see attractions in Lijiang. It is the oldest market in the city and is divided into several parts. Merchants come here very early to buy and sell, buy or sell a variety of fresh products, animals, and small accessories. Butchers in Lijiang are usually women because the Naxi people are traditionally matriarchal.
– Xuanke Naxi Concert
A classical concert lasting 1.5 hours is held in the courtyard of the traditional houses of Naxi people in the old city at 8 pm Dayan Ancient Orchestra is composed of about 30 singers and patriarchs over 90 years old. The musicians played an ancient Taoist music repertoire during the Tang and Song Dynasties. The head of the performance group, Mr. Xuan Ke, explained in English and Chinese about the concert.
– Black Dragon Pool
Located at the foot of North Elephant Hill, the Black Dragon Pool is the landmark of Lijiang. The Black Dragon Pool is enormous, with an area of 40 hectares including the library, the Deyue Pavilion, the Suocui Bridge and the Wufeng Tower, etc. In addition to the beautiful scenery of the Black Dragon Pool, people can see the reflection of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on sunny days.

Put together by the great director Zhang Yi Mou, most renowned for his work on the Beijing Olympics’ Opening Ceremony, this outdoor theater happens to be set over sea level by about 3300 meters. This cultural show utilizes more than 500 actors and performers of different ethnic minorities, each of which articulates a narrative that celebrates the unique traditions of all 11 ethnic minorities residing in Lijiang.
