Western Hills
The Western Hills also called “Mounts of the Sleeping Beauty”, is located on the west bank of Dianchi Lake, with peaks stretching more than 40 kilometers and a maximum altitude of about 2500 meters.
On the Western Hills, there are many well-known attractions such as Huating Temple and Taihua Temple, among them, Dragon gate is the most famous. Dragon Gate is the general name of “Sanqing Pavilion” and “Dragon Gate Grottoes”.
“Sanqing Pavilion” is a group of nine-story and eleven pavilion buildings, including Lingguan Hall, Zhenwu Hall, and other scenic spots; Dragon Gate Grottoes include Ciyun Cave, Yunhua Cave, Datian Pavilion, and other attractions. It is the largest and most exquisite Taoist grotto in Yunnan Province.
The whole project took 72 years for the three generations to complete from 1781 to 1853 in the Qing Dynasty. On the third March of the lunar calendar, visiting the Western Hills is a traditional spring tour custom of Kunming.
